Let your toddler have fun this Winters! :-)

Let your toddler have fun this Winters! :-)

Where does the white go when the snow melts? Children can have excitement and curiosity about almost everything around them.:-)

Winter is an exciting time for kids they love experiencing and playing in those windy evenings and enjoy at fullest. Unfortunately the weather outside isn't very sweet to them it can hit them badly but that doesn't mean we interrupt our child's little enjoyments, this winter let your child have fun outside with just little alertness. So here are some safety winter tips for both parents and children:

General tips :

  • # Check from time to time to make sure your child is warm and dry
  • # Keep children indoors if the temperature falls below −20°C, or if the wind chill is −28°C or greater.
  • # Children younger than eight years of age should always be well supervised outside, with someone elder to them to look after, cultivate buddy playing.
  • # Help children choose play areas with a warm shelter nearby such as a friend’s home.
  • # Advise children to play in an area away from roads, fences and water.
  • # Keep your child skin well moisturized with Vaseline or good body lotion to avoid dryness and itching
  • # Apply sunscreen to exposed skin, even when it’s cloudy.
  • # Keep some interesting warm drinks (Soups, boiled spicy vegetables ) ready and feed your child with them on regular intervals
  • # Green leafy vegetables, berries, citrus fruits, guavas, tomatoes, melons, papayas etc are rich in vitamin c which is best vitamin to fight against germs
  • # Use not too hot water for bath and use mild soaps in winters to avoid skin irritation.
  • # Keep your basic medical care ready in winters like Vaseline vicks, lip balm, cotton, paracetamol, cough syrups etc.

Clothing:

  • # Dress children in several layers of clothing. If they get too warm, they can remove one layer at a time.
  • # Always remove children’s clothing and boots immediately if they accidentally get wet.
  • # Make sure children wear a hat because most body heat is lost through the head.
  • # Have children keep their ears covered at all times to prevent frostbite.
  • # Have children wear mittens instead of gloves.
  • # Dress children in warm boots which are  roomy enough to wiggle their toes.
  • # Remove all woolen cloths which are itchy or irritating to your child
  • # Use scarfs, small hand gloves, smart woolen caps.

It's Fun to Learn, Not Fun & Learn

Last week during a dinner at one of my relatives place, I was just shocked to notice few kids from the family aged 3, 5 and 6 singing and trying to copy the exact movements of a famous dance numbers… Let me recall … yes!! “Yeh halkat jawani” and “Pinky hai paise walo ki….”

I was even more stunned when I saw parents clapping on their performance????? I was about to recover from this shock and I learnt that they learned those steps and song at their school. I was dumbfounded. These kids have been hearing this song on TV almost every day and learnt it better from their classmates. The reason being, their pre-school was making them perform on same song during their Annual function!! Now, I don’t want to name those branded pre-school but what kind of culture these pre-schools are incepting at the name of fun??? Away from home, pre-school is the only place which has major impact on a child’s psychology.

Years ago, Gurukul was the source of education in our country. It was one of the most vital aspects in building a child’s character. Learning and Knowledge linked with concentration, sincerity, dedication and loads of hard work. But, times changed and we started adapting concept of “Fun into learning” from West, who said and believed it is ‘Fun to Learn”. However in our endeavor to learn from the West, unfortunately we started copying their evils even in the education arena. So, in India Fun to learn has converted into Fun and Learn.

Is balance missing in your child?

The fun part has to be included to make children expressive and multi-skilled which are important too, yet most important aspect is to preserve the innocence of child. I am a little disappointed to see that the balance is missing. Why can’t our child enjoy the ramp walk on a nursery rhyme like “Twinkle Twinkle little star… or humpty dumpty”? Something that has suitable lyrics and music for the little ones.

Continuing this imbalance,  Let’s expect The high school students enjoying the beer parties!

Today’s Pre-Schools are miserably failing to imbibe values in a child as it seems that Fun & Learn have divorced each other. As a result of that, I was miffed at the above incident and if this imbalance continues, I will not be surprised if we hear stories of high school students enjoying beer parties in future? What are the schools doing to our children? What kind of environment are we providing to our little ones? Will we be able to preserve their innocence?

Did you as parent ever asked or thought about these serious Questions before choosing a Pre- School for your little one?

Be a alert parent and carefully select your child’s Pre School.

Technology v/s. Child.

Unlocking a touch screen phone
or grabbing that balloon,
What your child prefers?

The Effect of touch screens and gadgets on early Child development is the reason behind this common scene in every house. A few months back I saw a video on YouTube where a small child aged 1-year was sitting in front of a fashion magazine, gaming touching and swiping the page with her fingers in an effort to get the images to move.

Again one more such incident which made me stop and compelled me to give a thought to this is of a young girl aged 5 in a movie theatre last week , who wasn’t liking the movie being played on that huge screen so she irritatingly asked her mom  that   “where is its remote? Why don’t you change the channel its so damn boring “

Now this did initiated a laughter blasts amongst the parents and people around but it left me thinking for sure. Is our young generation so habituated to technology that they believe that their like and dislikes can be easily and quickly controlled just at a click or simply pressing a button??

KNOW THE EXPLOSIVE ISSUE
The effect of touch screens and other electronic devices on young children is an explosive issue. Kids are very, very responsive to the kind of stimulation they get from video games, educational or not. In the two years since this video was made, digital industry has responded with apps for babies and preschoolers. Such technology is available at Pre Schools even.

Our concern must be with the negative effects on those children of parents who are unable to put down their phones, tablets and laptops because these babies intently watch their parents and promptly tune into their distraction.

At Shanti Juniors our I3 Learning ladder is implemented for kids to induce age appropriate curiosity and thinking in a children’s mind which will  create a rational and positive creativity  in them.

Share their daily routines, Listen them.
There is no better substitute for sitting with your children at the end of the day listening and sharing their daily routine, reading out a story to them or even playing a simple game.  A child can no where develop more in any other environment than this one. However glamorous, technological or this digital world gets nothing could be more effective than a Parent –Child Interaction.

Parents must understand this and start acting towards the same before our next generation loses emotional values. These technical gadgets can accompany your child in later years of life but not right now.

Let them Celebrate their Childhood instead of Techno-hood.

Every Child wants to Explore, Lets make it curious enough!

Source : Google

"A child in your arms is always curious to reach out, touch and feel your earrings, glasses, grabbing your spectacles and pull them off even"

Yes we all have experienced this thousand times.

The first and simplest emotion which we discover in the human mind is "Curiosity" and in a child its intensity is doubled. "A child is a naturally curious creature" You can think of a baby in arms who is unable to crawl will try his level best with his best possible strength to reach out  to those earrings, necklaces, glasses, it will touch it , tap it and pull  them  off your face. He leans and reaches and grabs at your food, the more you hide it behind. His eyes follow the movement of people or pets or objects.

Let it Explore, That’s why
Your Child has come on Earth

All this because they just want to explore. You put them in new surrounding and they are eager and hungry to explore and experience every bit of it.

Once a child was sitting in the garden watching an apple falling from the tree and was curious to know why the apple should always descend perpendicularly to the ground, why not side ways? His curiosity leads him to discover a universal Law of Motion and we all know who that child was, he was Sir Isaac Newton. Similarly a Child's curiosity always leads him to discover something innovative.

Experiential Learning is one of the best ways these days in all the Pre-School to educate little ones about small and big concepts surrounding them. A Child learns more when he is allowed to explore and expose to new things because it ignites his natural curiosity. His learning skills and instincts develop more with new surroundings and presence of all the new catchments for its ears to listen, eyes to see and hands to feel.

I 3 learning Ladder based on Experiential Learning is the well known and most effective teaching philosophy at SJ whose main focus is to enable the child to bring out the artist from within and not letting the curiosity in the child die even when he grows up.  A child learns to discover oneself and this aspect of learning is religiously followed in Shanti Juniors Curriculum. It is one of the major supporting aspects for a Holistic Development of a child which is implemented at SJ via Field Trips. The Field Trips at SJ  are always connected and related to the learning theme being taught in school so it’s quiet easy, comfortable and interesting for a child to connect and relate the real experience with the learning at its School. The understanding of the concept is not only much deeper, stronger and memorable for our little juniors but this actually let them Celebrate their Childhood and eventually they become confident and smart individual for lifetime.
